Look what I have found.

I just stumbled across this amazing list.

I didn't know about most of the sites there, but was totally amazed.
Have a look!

It's Carnival time!

15. November 2014:

Fühlt euch willkommen in Köln!

Altweiber

November 15, 2014:
The euphoria that beset me on November 11 was still pumping through me and was just about to be replaced with excitedness, looking forward to the Carnival highlights in February, when I lay down on the couch and started to sketch my plans for this Carnival season.

My girlfriend and I always had/have a lot of guests coming from around the world for Carnival. Most of them have never been to Cologne let alone Carnival and are usually quite surprised to see how much planning we put into this seemingly chaotic festival. Which costumes, how much beer and schnaps, what to eat, when is this one or that other parade and where? In addition, guests obviously have to take the more or less voluntary 101 on 'Carnival vocabulary': Alaaf, Kamelle, Strüßjer...some of the more talented ones will even memorize some of the Carnival songs. Good job!

Apparently, our place will get packed again this February. Not only, but also because of this, I started to compile a „small“ overview on Carnival. It is by no means exhaustive – there is just too much going on in Cologne during these days – but it contains the essentials and will hopefully appeal to one or the other and let them consider coming to our city for Carnival.

If it does: See you in Cologne 2015!

Let's just start with the key data, shall we?
  • In 2015, Carnival on the streets starts on February 12; everything ends on Ash Wednesday (Feb. 18).
  • This year's motto is „Social jeck – kunterbunt vernetzt“ (translating into sth. like „Social crazyness – connected in colours)
  • The Dreijestirn (lacking anything close to a good translation, I'll just call them the holy trinity of Carnival) consists of Prince Holger I., peasant Michael and virgin Alexandra this year.

Altweiber (Fat Thursday)

The idea of Altweiber (women taking over the power) came up about 200 years ago in Bonn-Beuel, where a so-called Ladies' committee formed. In this committee, women met to exchange views on their hard, male-dominated lives and supported each other. It was a first movement to oppose and reject patriarchy.

Today, the political character has disappeared and women on Altweiber-Thursday have to hold on to each other not for political support, but for the consumed alcohol... This procedure can be observed very well on and around Heumarkt and Alter Markt. The party starts – obviously – at 11:11 AM.

In the neighbourhood of Nippes, festivities already start at 09:11 AM at Wilhelmplatz. The Nippes people are a crazy bunch (in a completely positive and likable way!)

The play Jan un Griet is performed at Chlodwigplatz/Severinstor at about two o'clock. After that, a parade runs from there back to Alter Markt. The play will probably not make that much sense if you don't speak German, but it can still be a nice start to see that Carnival is much more than just a lot of drinking.

Friday

Friday is recovery day. If you like to see another parade: In the late afternoon, clubs from the Cologne neighbourhoods converge from surrounding places onto Alter Markt. I've never been there myself, but I heard it's quite a nice parade. Besides that, there are some parties like the „Kölschfest“ close to Südstadion.

Karnevalsamstag (Saturday)

Starting into a day full of highlights.
Blue instead of Red Sparks...

Question: But how and where to start such a day? Answer: at 10:30 AM on Neumarkt, with traditional pea soup (Ähzezupp) and Kölsch beer. This is were the Rote Funken (literally 'Red sparks', rather a Red Guard) meets and 'commemorates' 1823, when the first Carnival parade took place here. It is an easy principle: you buy a Rote-Funken-beer glass and have it refilled for free as often as you like. But (try to) go slow! It's gonna be a long day.
You should definitely see the Rote Funken's 'Stippeföttche' dance: Grown-up man dressed up in uniforms and with wigs are rubbing their butts against each other. Class. We suppose that Colognians invented this (shall we really call it that) 'dance', but the origins might date back even longer and hint somewhere else.

It will get spooky in the evening. It's Geisterzug (ghost parade) time. This alternative parade is refreshingly different from all others. There are no Kamelle (sweets) and Strüßjer (small flower bouquets); the parade aims at being the city's cleanest.
There are also less – or rather different – rules: Everybody is invited to join. The Geisterzug organizers say: “We accept spectators, but we prefer participants.” In consequence, the parade is not only a party but turns into a political demonstration. In addition, it is deliberately technology-free: music via speakers or motorized vehicles are not allowed. In 2015, the parade honors Aggripina, the founder of Cologne. It's her 2000th birthday, this should make for a proper party. Therefore, the parade runs along the old Roman city walls, starting at Malzmühle and heading back to Heumarkt. There will probably be a lot of Roman ghosts this year. The parade starts at 7 PM sharp.

Sunday

Another important day: today, we'll have the so-called Schull- und Veedelszöch. Schools and clubs from the Colognian neighborhoods create their own parade which runs along the route of the big parade on Rose Monday. For many people from Cologne, this is a popular alternative (or supplement) to the big parade. A jury honors the best walking group and the best truck group, while the chief of the Rose Monday parade gives away an award for the most original group. All three winners will take part in the Rose Monday parade the next day. The Veedelszöch took place for the first time in 1933 and aim(ed) at underlining the folksy nature of Carnival's origins. The parade starts – again obviously – at 11:11 AM.

Rosenmontag (Rose Monday)

This is nothing less than the absolute climax of Cologne Carnival.

The Rosenmontagszoch attracts the most spectators and is just huge. It starts already at 10:30 AM and winds throughout the city center for hours. You will spend the complete morning and most of the afternoon at the parade. Rose Monday is probably the best opportunity for tourists to get to know and experience Carnival on the streets and everything that comes with it (sweets, flowers, kisses etc). After the parade, people head to the pubs and bars of Kwartier Latäng, Südstadt or the own neighbourhood to continue the party. Last man standing is the principle here.

Veilchendienstag (Tuesday)

For many people, the end of Rose Monday also means the end of Carnival. However, for others especially the events on Tuesday are Carnival highlights. One example is the 'Nubbelverbrennung', where a straw-stuffed puppet is burned. The puppet stands symbolically for all the misdemeanours (of which nature whatsoever) of the last days. Several pubs in Südstadt, for instance Ubierschänke, as well as on Zülpicher Straße and in the Old Town burn their Nubbels.
In addition, Carnival is still alive and kicking in many Cologne neighborhoods. There are local parades in Ehrenfeld, Nippes, Deutz, Kalk... Check out this list with all parades on all days here

Wow, I just realized that there are really a lot.

On Ash Wednesday, we start awaiting the next season.

10.11.2014

1st Post :)

Hallo zusammen,
